The Academy of Natural Sciences at Cape Fear High School offers concentrations in the life sciences, earth sciences, chemistry, and physics. Specialized courses feature “hands-on” science and the use of innovative technologies. Each course of study culminates in a senior research course.
Academy students develop proficiency in science process skills and in manipulating scientific equipment through an emphasis on “doing science” in basic science courses as well as in upper level science and guided research courses. Participants are able to make informed science career choices through frequent interactions with local scientists in government, industry, education, and military.
Academy students are required to successfully complete at least seven science courses upon graduation. Students must maintain a 3.0 unweighted grade point average in their science classes and an overall 2.7 unweighted grade point average. Students must maintain a clean disciplinary file and pay $32 dues annually.
Many of our science academy students are active in extracurricular activities such as The Marching Colts, ROTC, and athletics. We have a few students who are also enrolled in the Academy of Agriculture and Natural Sciences.
