Battle of the Books (BOB) /  Contact – Wendy Bozeman

Description: Students read from a list of 20 books. A final team of 12 students will compete against each of the middle schools in the County. Winner continues to the State competition. 
Meeting Times: Team meets during homeroom from Nov.- Mar.; after-school meetings are announced in advance.
Requirements: Any 6-8th graders with a love for reading, who are motivated, and can work independently & as a group.
Yearly Activities: Competition – held end of February or first week in March; Movie celebrations on Fridays after school.
Membership Dues: The only additional costs will be to contribute to the purchase of their team shirts. Any parent willing to donate snacks may do so!

Civic Oration / Contact – Ninette Roberts

Description: In 1948, Modern Woodmen of America developed this contest to offer students an opportunity to develop skills in clear thinking and public speaking.  Meeting Times: Starts in January. After-school meetings are announced in advance.
Requirements: Grades 6-8. Prepare, research, and deliver a three- to five-minute speech.
Yearly Activities: Competition in April/May.

Forensics / Contact – Ms. Thomas

Description: This is public speaking and performance all in one! Participants choose Original Oratory, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation or Extemporaneous Speaking.
Meeting Times: Wednesday from 2:50-4:00. Meeting times will be announced during morning announcements
Requirements: Grades 6-8. Students must select appropriate pieces, learn the rules pertaining to their area, and memorize them for performance.
Yearly Activities: Tournaments are held throughout the year. There are 2 major festivals in Fall and Spring.
Membership Dues: None

Junior Student 2 Student (JS2S) / Contact – Mrs. Kemp

Description: The Junior Student 2 Student (JS2S) Student Ambassador program is designed to offer support to new students enrolling in PFMS. JS2S volunteer their time to engage in activities that help meet the needs of our new students. Current students who would like to be a part of this club may pick up an application in Student Services.  The goal is to create a “welcome committee” of current students on each team who could help new students find their classes, eat lunch with them on the first day, etc.   Students will also need a teacher recommendation form to participate.
Meeting Times: The week before awards ceremonies and as needed when new students enroll.
Requirements: Complete application process; Excellent recommendations
Yearly Activities: Various transition activities designed for 5th graders preparing for middle school, e.g. Rising Raider Day and Pen Pal letters; conduct tours and serve as “buddies” to new students who enroll; and other duties as they arise throughout the year.

Junior BETA Club / Contact – Ms. Sessoms

Description: The National Beta Club, a student-centered organization, continually develops and nurtures individuals by providing opportunities and experiences, enabling them to demonstrate the ideals of character, achievement, service and leadership in a global community. (National Beta Club Vision Statement)  
Meeting Times: After-school meetings are announced in advance.
Requirements: Students must hold a grade of 87% and above in all their courses. Eligibility will be determined after the first reporting period for those students otherwise qualified. Two teacher recommendations are also required.
Yearly Activities: Various service projects

Math Counts / Contact – Mrs. Blake-Bean

Description: The MATHCOUNTS Competition Program provides the extra incentive and the perfect atmosphere for students to push themselves to achieve more in mathematics. Consisting of fun and creative problems that promote critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, the MATHCOUNTS competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components. Though challenging and non-routine, the competition problems focus on the 6th through 8th grade standards of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics.
Meeting Times: Will vary. We will meet more often as the competition date approaches.
Requirements: EOG scores will be considered as well as classroom performance. Students who make the team will be required to meet for the competition one Saturday in February. The team will be composed primarily of 8th graders due to the level of math, but 6th and 7th graders are welcome for the exposure.
Yearly Activities: A regional competition is held in February.

Quiz Bowl / Contact – Mr. Skarie

Description: Participants must compete and demonstrate knowledge in academic trivia at countywide competitions.
Meeting Times: After-school meetings are announced in advance.
Requirements: A love of trivia, a powerful memory, and commitment to memorizing the rules of the competition and material.
Yearly Activities: Individual competitions begin at the beginning of school and build up to the county-wide competition.
Membership Dues: $0

Science Olympiad / Contact – Ms. Wilson and Ms. Simpson

Description: Students participate in various categories. A final team of students will compete against each of the middle schools in the County. Winner continues to the State competition.  
Meeting Times:  after-school meetings are announced in advance.
Requirements: Any 6-8th graders with a love for science, who are motivated, and can work independently & as a group.
Yearly Activities: Competition – usually held at the end of February or first week in March.
Membership Dues: Team may be asked to contribute to the purchase of their team shirts. Any parent willing to donate snacks may do so!

Spanish Quiz Bowl / Contact – Isis Perez

Description: Participants must compete and demonstrate knowledge in Spanish trivia at a county-wide competition. It is a great opportunity for those interested in Spanish culture, foods, geography, language, arts, etc. After placing in second place, our goal for next year is first!
Meeting Times: as announced, twice a week after school.
Requirements: Grades 6-8. Students with dedication and a good attitude. Enrollment in Spanish class is not required.
Yearly Activities: The competition is held in mid-February.
Membership Dues: $0. Team shirts are free! There are no additional costs unless any parents would like to donate snacks for our after school practices!

Student Council / Contact: Leacer Powell and Mrs. Simpson

Description: Students are elected by their peers and participate in various community-oriented activities and fundraisers within the school. The advisory board to the student council is the School Climate Committee. 
Meeting Times: 3rd Wednesday starting in September from 3-3:30. After-school meetings are held as needed and announced in advance.
Requirements: Campaign for nomination as homeroom representative, Secretary, Vice President, and/or President. Prepare campaign speech.
Yearly Activities: Food Drive, Student/Faculty basketball game, a partnership with the VA nursing home, assisting feeder schools as needed, and other student-centered activities when possible.
Membership Dues: $0
