Battle of the Books
-
The purpose of the Elementary Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the elementary level. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Even during the height of competition, students and coaches should remember that the goal is to READ, not necessarily to win.
All County Chorus
-
All County Chorus consists of fifth grade students who are auditioned in their home school. These students meet before school to practice and work to learn a variety of music. They come together for one intense day of rehearsal in the spring with other students from across Cumberland County. The following day, they present a wonderful, free concert in the Crown Theater. All County Chorus students agree that is it one of the highlights of the year.
Strings/Orchestra
-
All 5th grade students are eligible to sign up for Strings class at the beginning of each year. Informational letters are given out at a recruiting concert in late August. Parents and students are given further information at the Parent Night hosted by Mac Williams in September. The Strings class meets twice a week in the afternoon for 45 minutes. Students usually play one or two concerts during PTA meetings during the school year. In addition, students will play during a field trip to hear the North Carolina Symphony. In late April the students will participate in the countywide Orchestra Spring Festival. Students benefit from learning how to play a stringed instrument as well as musical concepts of note reading and musical vocabulary. It is a wonderful opportunity for students who love music.
