Sixteen years ago, Cumberland County Schools (CCS) created the Academy of Scholars (AOS), a competitive program designed to prepare high-achieving students to successfully obtain scholarships and prestigious university admissions.  Eligible students attend monthly seminars held at high schools, local university campuses and community sites throughout the school year.  Students are selected by the Scholarship Committee at each high school during the fall semester of their 11th-grade year.  Each comprehensive high school has 20 seniors and 20 juniors participate in the program.   College admissions representatives state that they have begun to look for participation in the Academy of Scholars when accepting students because they know these individuals are prepared for the stressors and reality of life beyond high school.

This club is dedicated towards constantly improving and learning about various computer science topics, such as computer programming, video game design, website design, robotics and more. Students will work together in groups based on their focus areas, helping each other prepare for competitions and project showcases at various events. Students interested in more programming competitions can inquire during club meetings about such opportunities. All SFHS students interested in computers and such may join the club.

Future Business Leaders of America 
FBLA’s purpose is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. Students will participate in regional and state competitive events, as well as participate in community service programs and projects.

 Future Farmers of America
The National FFA Organization, FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Speech and Debate Club is an academic activity available to all students. This program is challenging, competitive in nature, and requires regular practice, dedication, and hard work. Speech involves a presentation by one or two students that are judged against others in a round of competition. The debate involves an individual or a team of debaters working to effectively convince a judge that his or her side of a resolution is more valid.

JROTC is one of the most respected and accomplished extra-curricular programs at Seventy-First. Cadets have the opportunity to work with the Drill Teams, Aircraft Rockery Club, Blue Knights, etc. Cadets also participate in community service projects, compete in competitive drill competitions, and develop critical skills.

 It is open to students who are currently enrolled in an honor level Chinese course. Students will organize and participate in cultural festival celebrations in the school, conduct culture related activities and participate in community services and events.

The National Honor Society is a prestigious organization with a reputation for excellence among administrators, faculty members, students, parents, and residents of the school community. Through NHS chapter service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Membership is thus both an honor and a commitment. New members must have a minimum 3.5 weighted GPA, have taken or are currently enrolled in an Advanced Placement (AP) or Honor’s level course, and have no disciplinary suspensions or expulsions on record.

For Trade and Industrial Students- Skills USA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Skills USA helps each student excel in leadership, communication, industry skills and more. Students also have the opportunity to compete in Leadership Contests and Occupational Related contests.

Students are inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society based on their performance in Spanish and their overall scholastic standing and leadership. The Society recognizes excellent achievement and promotes the awareness of Hispanic cultures in the school. Service to the community is also a priority of the organization.

 Student 2 Student Organization This student-led group welcomes incoming military students to their new school and helps departing students prepare for their next school.
