Our Mission:
The mission of Cumberland County School Counselors is helping students demonstrate a positive attitude towards self and others, gain career and life-planning skills, and develop responsible social skills. The development of these skills will increase school and life success. Services Bi-monthly classroom lessons with K-5 students. Topics will focus on academic, career, and personal/social development.

School Counselor- Aston Smith

Professional school counselors are certified/licensed educators with a minimum of a Master’s degree in school counseling, making them uniquely qualified to address students’ cognitive, socio-emotional and career development needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program. As a professional school counselor, they work with students on an individual basis, in small groups, and provide guidance in their classrooms. The focus of the counseling program is to promote academic success, career awareness, and personal/social skills. Other services include crisis intervention, conflict resolution, effective communication skills, character education, and coordinating referrals to school and community agencies.

 Social Worker- Shannon Sykes

School Social Worker is a specialized area of practice within the broad field of the social work profession. School Social Workers have the knowledge and training specific to the needs of children in the public school system. One of the primary roles of the school social worker is to serve as the liaison between the home, the school, and community. Our school social workers provide services to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by identifying, modifying and removing barriers to learning while promoting wellness and student success.

Anyone can make a referral to the school social worker. Some reasons may include but are not limited to: academic concerns, behavior concerns, child abuse and neglect issues, family violence, homelessness, attendance/truancy, health issues, mental health concerns, and family crisis.

School Psychologist– Dr. Aisha Wilson 

A school Psychologist is highly trained in both psychology and education. Dr. Wilson’s main goal is to facilitate learning and to promote the cognitive, social, and personal development of all students. She identifies and assesses the learning, development, and adjustment characteristics and needs of students. Dr. Wilson uses assessment data about each student and his/her environments in developing appropriate interventions and programs. She also provides direct intervention for students, consultation to parents, teachers, other school personnel, and community agencies to enhance learning and adjustment of students.

School Exceptional Children Case Teacher- Jackie Graham

The EC Case Teacher can address concerns for students eligible for special education services. They can verify service implementation and communicate with the student’s team to meet their academic and functional needs. In addition, she can coordinate Child Find. This is a coordinated effort between the Student Services Team and the Exceptional Children Services to locate and identify children and youth suspected of or diagnosed with a disability who might have intellectual, physical, or emotional disabilities and are unable to benefit from the regular school program without special assistance.

School Nurse– Katrina Young (Available Tuesdays 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

School nurses provide expertise and oversight of school health services and promote health education. Because healthy children are successful learners, school nurses advocate for the physical, emotional, mental, and social health of students.

Military Family & Youth Liaison (MFYL) Reginald Fields and Zakira Cruz Rich 

The military family and youth liaison (MFYL) acts as a communication link between the installation and the school district in order to ease the transition for military students.  The MFYL coordinates and supports efforts to: assess needs, build awareness of resources, and connect those with needs to supportive solutions.
