Questions and Answer about Behavior Concerns
Question: What does it mean when the teachers tell me my child can't "attend to activities?"
Answer: Your child may be "off task", not beginning or finishing activities. He or she may be easily distracted by various normal classroom movements, such as someone walking by in the hallway, noises outside, etc. He or she may give up on activities before the activities are completed.
Question: Is there something in my child's medical history that could be causing this problem?
Answer: Medical history as well as social history can be very significant in the development of social behaviors. Discuss any concerns you may have openly with your child's doctor. The doctor may want input from the teacher, schools psychologist, guidance counselor or other involved school personnel.
Question: What can I do at home to help my child improve his behavior?
Answer: Work very closely with your child's teacher and school personnel. Provide consistency in your response to his behavior. Keep the school up to date on changes in your child's life.
Question: How do I involve others in my home in the behavior change process?
Answer: Communication is the key. Keep others in your home informed of the plan. Tell them what is expected of them so they can be a part of the behavior plan for your child.
Question: How do I find support for myself as we are working on behavior changes at home?
Answer: There are several agencies that offer support. Contact the school guidance counselor or school psychologist for assistance.
Question: What kinds of limits do I need to set?
Answer: These limits are very individual. Work closely with professional such as the pediatrician, mental health workers, school personnel, etc.
Question: How do we know when we need individual or family therapy?
Answer: Perhaps the assistance of a medical doctor or pastor could be helpful in this determination.
