Question: How is your role different from Social Services or Child Protective Services?

Answer: The role of a counselor is different in that counselors work to facilitate student achievement in the areas of personal and social adjustment, academic success, and career awareness. Parent involvement is an integral part of achieving each of these goals.

Answer: Information about your family will not be shamed with anyone unless you give permission. However, confidentiality must be broken by law if child abuse is suspected. Question: As my child goes through school, are you able to maintain contact with me?

Question: Are there parenting classes or support groups which would be helpful to me?

Answer: There are classes available in the community - we can provide you with information regarding these classes. In some cases the school may offer parenting classes - that information can also be provided by the counselor.

Answer: Yes, these feelings are addressed in the beginning of the helping process.

Question: How do I put all this information from so many people together so it makes sense?

Answer: Approach the situation slowly and calmly. Ask questions until you feel you completely understand - remember you are the parent and you have the right to know!

Question: Are the services of a school counselor long-term or short-term?

Answer: This depends on the needs of the child. In some cases, the counselor may make a referral to an outside agency for more extensive assistance
